While cobia fishing off the beaches of Pensacola, late in the day, as the southwest wind picked up, we experienced, for the first time, the smell of oil. As we were wrapping up our day, enjoying seeing quite a few fish, the mood changed drastically as we realized that the oil spill is very real and eminently approaching. It took the fun out of an otherwise perfect day. This video is the first of many to come as a chronicle of our experiences of how this catastrophic event will change our lives forever.
As I enter Bayou Grande in Pensacola Bay, this is the first time I see up-close the "booms" that are to become a part of our fishing experience for the foreseeable future. They were floating from the mouth of the Bayou all the way across to the island, in a seeming feeble attempt to keep out the approaching sludge. It again brought some stark reality to the oil spill and how it will infiltrate not only our bays and waterways, but our lives.
