Gulf Coast Oil Spill
Before Oil Spill
Deepwater Horizon Fire
On April 20th 2010 at approximately 10pm the U.S. Coast Guard District Eight command center
received notice of an explosion and fire from the Deepwater Horizon oil rig. The Deepwater Horizon was
located approximately 52 miles off the coast of Venice, Louisana. The rig containing
700,000 gallons of diesel sank when another explosion occured on April 22nd. It is unknown
how much oil is gushing into the Gulf of Mexico. Numbers from 1,000 gallons to 200,000 gallons of oil per day
have been reported to be pouring into the Gulf of Mexico.
This historic disaster will have an enormous impact on both recreational and commercial fishing along the
Gulf Coast. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has
closed
fishing from the mouth of the Mississippi river to Pensacola Bay, Florida for a minimum of 10 days. The
ecomomic impact on the Gulf Coast is likely to be measured in the billions of dollars. BP, the company performing
the drilling, has started to accept
claims
for the oil spill.
